Programs
Roads to Scholars
The Roads to Scholars Program is dedicated to high school students obtaining higher education, and continuing on to college after high school. Students in this program will be exposed to a variety of different college campuses and school environments. Students will be able to take field trips, sit in on college classes, visit colleges overnight, shadow college students, participate in college discussion groups led by college students, talk with college campus clubs and organizations, talk with college professors, and attend college events. This program is committed to giving students opportunities to see college in a different light and give students the experience of being on a college campus and giving the student the feel of being a college student. As part of the program they also have one on one time with Roads to Scholars counselors to help with college applications, financial aid, and scholarships. While helping students complete these things students will learn how to successfully research, apply and complete college applications and scholarships on their own. Counselors from the Roads to Scholars Program will mentor and teach students about time management, setting priorities, accomplishing and setting goals and selecting and researching degrees and majors. One of the main goals of the Roads to Scholars Program is to help mentor and prepare students to have a smooth and successful transition from high school to college life.
Club HBCU
Club HBCU is a program that promotes Historical Black Colleges and Universities. In this club students will learn what it is like to attend a historical black college and the life style that goes along with attending an HBCU. Student will learn what these great intuitions of higher learning have to offer, from academics, social life , athletics , fraternities and sororities, and many other aspects of attending an HBCU. Student will also be able to understand the benefits of attending an HBCU and all that they have to offer.
B.F.T Young Women Program
Broadening Flourishing Thriving Young Women Program
Broadening Flourishing Thriving Young Women Program is a program dedicated to female’s in grades 7 -12 in a traditional one on one mentor to mentee setting or group setting. This program is utilized solely to help these young ladies live productive and positive lives and assist them in engaging in positive relationships, build self esteem, broaden their social skills, flourish in their education and career goals and thrive for excellence . The young women in this program will also learn how to strengthen their decision making abilities, deal with peer pressure, and develop life skills. This is a school and community based program, and can meet anywhere including but not limited to attending events, and on school grounds in view of school officials. Referrals for participation should be solicited by but not limited to teachers, guidance counselors, parents/guardians and youth workers.
Character Education Program
The purpose of Character Education Program (CEP) is to help enhance and educate at risk youth’s behavior through group counseling workshops, mentoring and character education. The CEP program will deliver and implement a guidance curriculum plan that is also aligned with the ongoing mission of the school. The purpose of the CEP is to help obtain desired and acceptable behavior from students. Students must understand that there will be consequences for unacceptable behavior, but there is also support for them if they are having emotional difficulties in school or at home. The CEP is not going to take the place of discipline referrals. The purpose of the CEP is to avoid having to take severe disciplinary action against students who have emotional and behavioral problems in and outside the classroom, and give the administration options as to how to best address their behavior. The CEP , also provides support for these students to help them mature , and help them make better decisions in class and throughout life as they continue to grow and develop. By providing this support to the student it will also help them academically. Academics and behavior are linked together and a student must be emotionally stable in order to receive instruction, comprehend material, commit it to memory, and to be able to actively use what they have learned. It is important to remember that a student must be emotionally stable in order to learn and receive instruction in the classroom.
The CEP has been structured to be:
* Applied to any school/district
* Work seamlessly with the targets and objectives of the school/district
* The school/district will NOT surrender any precious time of its members or staff
* The program will fit into any school/district schedule
Nelson House Mentoring Program
The Nelson House Mentoring Program mentors male’s ages 7-17 years old, in a traditional one on one mentor to mentee setting or group setting. This program is utilized solely to help these males live productive and positive lives and assist them in disengaging in self destructive behaviors and negative relationships. The mentors are required to meet with their mentees at least once a week or as desired. The focus of this program is centered on mentors helping their mentees strengthen their decision making abilities, dealing with peer pressure,developing life skills, and the value of a strong education. The mentors will also help give their mentees strategies on how to deal with personal and academic difficulties. This is a school and community based program, and mentors and mentees can meet anywhere including attending events, and on school grounds in view of school officials. Referrals for youth participation should be solicited by but not limited to teachers, guidance counselors, parents/guardians and youth workers.
Attitudes for Athletes
Attitudes for Athletes focus is on school athletics and behavior. This program is designed to work with any grade level and school team sport. The attitudes for athlete’s program works with school sports programs to provide these student athletes with sportsmanship on and off the field, leadership skills, conflict resolutions, social skills, time management, and academic advisement. These student athletes will learn what it means to be a leader on the school campus and in the classroom. This program will expose these student athletes that education is just as if not more important than their particular sport that they play. Sport Mentors will work with their respective coaches to help these student athletes with academic success and be socially responsible, as well as speak with other athletes.
